Desert Hot Springs, Riverside County
Cabot Yerxa, a homesteader, dug a well here in 1913 and struck hot mineral water, then found cold water with a second well a few hundred yards away. Spas followed in the 1940s, and Desert Hot Springs incorporated in 1963. Yerxa spent his last decades building a rambling pueblo by hand from salvaged materials; it is now a museum.
